Upon his graduation from the Ontario College of Art in 1925, he received the Governor-General's Award in recognition of his outstanding work. He pursued a further two years of graduate study at the Art College prior to travelling to Europe where he attended several schools in Paris, including Académie Julian and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. Returning to Canada in 1929, he was given the first one-man exhibition to be held at the Art Gallery of Toronto. Two years later he was elected a member of the Ontario Society of Artists. Although Stone specialized in the painting of portraits early in his career, he eventually turned to painting landscapes, notably winter scenery.
