BiographyBorn in 1941 in Toronto, Ontario and passed away in 2022 in Montreal, Quebec, Heywood was a prolific printmaker and artist, who reinvented printmaking techniques to redefine the ‘look’ of a print. In 1969, he became a member of the Ontario Society of Artists and later joined the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. Heywood immersed himself in a variety of cultures (France, Japan, Egypt, Iran, Cambodia, and especially India), while also taking inspiration from past and present Western Artists (realism of Dutch Old Masters, multi-layered dynamism of cubists, or Otis Tamasauskas—a Canadian artist the University of Guelph houses in its collection as well. Heywood commonly combines icons and imagery drawn from contemporary daily experience (such as logos and family photos) with more traditional art theory and content, like still-life and portraiture. This style acts as a sort of commentary on the state of contemporary printmaking and redefines the practice as a whole.Person TypeIndividual
