BiographyThe radical character of the Painters 11 came principally through the younger members of the group, with Town and Ronald and with Hodgson, Yarwood and Mead. These five, though clearly, een fiercely independent, were united by the explosive energy of the surfaces of their paintings and by their willingness to concentrate their approaches on a single line of research. The reference to landscape is apparent in Ray Mead's paintings; bunched and layered taches are suspended as if from a horizon, an approach similar to the abstraction of Nicolas de Stael. After 1963 Mead began to concentrate primarily on drawing and photography, returning to painting in the early 1970's. Mead maintains his position in Canadian art as an active, mature artist of national significance exhibiting regularly with established Canadian dealers and museums.
