Carl Beam was born in West Bay, Ontario in 1943. He received his Bachelor of Fine Art at the University of Victoria in 1975 and completed graduate studies at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. He was raised by his Ojibwa mother on a reserve on Manitoulin Island. This fact of "outsiderness" drives his painting and its uneasy inventory of European-rooted images.
